Letter of congratulations from Tamás Sulyok to Pope Leo XIV

To His Holiness Pope Leo XIV

"And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church,
and the powers of death shall not prevail against it."
(Mt 16,18)

Your Holiness,

In the name of Hungary, which holds fast to its thousand-year Christian heritage, I greet you with sincere love and deep respect as the newly elected Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, the 267th successor to the Apostle Peter.
It is difficult to express the joy we feel now. I am sure that in the Holy Father our cardinals have chosen a prayerful and wise, experienced leader.
I look with admiration upon the ministry of the Holy Mother Church: to bear witness before the world to God and to Christ made man, and to proclaim His love to all people. In this Holy Year of Hope — amid the deepening secularization of the developed world and the conflicts and wars that afflict our world — no ministry is more vital or more solemn in its responsibility.
I think with the deepest respect of the social engagement and commitment of the Roman Catholic Church, which for thousands of years has shaped the world and served its countless peoples.
Thank you for reaffirming to us, through your church ministry, that we have something and Somebody to live for. Thank you for being a steadfast advocate of peace, love of neighbour and human dignity.
May God bless you and your ministry! Together with the Hungarian people, I offer my prayers for you!

In humble reverence,

Dr. Tamás Sulyok
