Thomas Bach, former President of the IOC, received prestigious recognition
Thomas Bach's achievements, successes, athletic and sports management qualities are recognised all over the world, and his life's work speaks for itself, said Tamás Sulyok, Head of State, before presenting the Grand Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit to Thomas Bach, Honorary President for Life of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), at Sándor Palace.
The President emphasised that we Hungarians felt it was important to express our appreciation for the IOC's now Honorary President. For us, sport is not only an international matter, but also a national one, as we are a nation of sporting stars.
"They are our heroes, we look up to them as our role models, we draw inspiration from them," emphasised Tamás Sulyok, adding that this is why we greatly appreciate the man who has dedicated his life to ensuring that our role models can prove themselves in the best possible environment.
The President of Hungary said that the Olympic movement is close to the hearts of Hungarians, and Thomas Bach is a leading figure in the Olympic movement and a steadfast promoter of its spirit.
"He has done a great deal to ensure that sport – as a field of peaceful competition and honest contest – occupies a prominent place in the world," the head of state pointed out.
Thomas Bach has left a unique mark with his IOC presidency and has also highlighted that we can truly achieve our goals not in opposition to others, but together, emphasised Tamás Sulyok.
The head of state drew attention to the word "comunitare" meaning "together", which, in his opinion, is the main driving force behind Thomas Bach's presidency of the IOC and the secret of his success.
Thomas Bach has always valued us, Hungarian sport and Hungarian athletes - the President of Hungary reminded - adding that it is only fitting that we, in turn, also recognise his achievements.
Thomas Bach received the award in recognition of his work to promote the Olympic movement based on peaceful competition between nations, his appreciation of sport and athletes, his commitment to clean sport and fair competition, introducing younger generations to the ideals and values of Olympism.
