Statement from Sándor Palace regarding the decision adopted by the Holy Crown Council

The President of Hungary supported the proposal to move the Holy Crown to the Plenary Chamber of the Parliament Building for the swearing-in ceremony of the Members of Parliament; however, the Holy Crown Council ultimately did not approve the proposal.

Following proposals raised during the political consultation talks in preparation for the National Assembly’s Inaugural Session in 2026, the Director-General of the National Assembly Office submitted a proposal to the Holy Crown Council. On the basis of the
proposal, the Holy Crown Council had to decide whether to consent to the Holy Crown being temporarily placed and kept in the Plenary Chamber of the Parliament Building on the day of the National Assembly’s Inaugural Session in 2026.

Dr. Tamás Sulyok, President of Hungary and Chair of the Holy Crown Council, expressing his support, presented the proposal to the Council.

The proposal, along with other observations put forward by Members of the Council, was duly discussed by the Council. During the deliberations, the majority required for the adoption of a substantive decision was not achieved; consequently, no resolution was adopted.

Nevertheless, Dr. Tamás Sulyok, President of Hungary, pointed out that the above does not preclude the possibility that, if a claim is made in this regard, the swearing-in ceremony before the National Assembly could take place in the presence of the Holy Crown at its traditional place of safekeeping, the Dome Hall of the Parliament Building, in a manner befitting the occasion, in compliance with the relevant legislation and with due regard to historical precedents.
