Protecting the Public Interest - Head of State's Welcome Speech on Prosecution Service Day
Since 1991, the anniversary of the first Act on the Prosecution Service, June 10, 1871, has marked Prosecution Service Day in Hungary. In the Palace of Justice, President of Hungary Tamás Sulyok, Prosecutor General Bálint Gábor Nagy, Head of the Supreme Court Zs. András Gábor Varga, and outgoing Prosecutor General Péter Polt shared their thoughts on the occasion with the leaders of the Prosecution Service.
"There is an eternal and immutable principle that laws must be strictly adhered to."
In his first words, President Tamás Sulyok quoted Ferenc Deák, the committed standard-bearer of jurisprudence. "The Sage of the Fatherland played an unforgettable role in working out the Compromise with Austria. Thanks to the Compromise, new laws were enacted that reformed the legal framework and institutions of the prosecution, the courts and the legal profession. Lasting values were created, the bulwarks of the rule of law”.
The Head of State stressed that by prosecuting criminal offences or taking action against other illegal acts and violations, as required by law, the Public Prosecutor's Office does nothing other than protect the public interest.
Tamás Sulyok also stressed that public security, which the Public Prosecutor's Office strives for every day, is a necessity of life for every Hungarian family and every Hungarian person. Working for Hungary and for the Hungarian people is a noble service.
"Therefore, I consider it important to pay tribute to all members of the prosecution profession with recognition and appreciation," the President of Hungary said.
