The President of Hungary received the Sultan of Brunei
Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei was received with military honours by President Dr. Tamás Sulyok at Kossuth Square.
Talks between the two sides took place at Sándor Palace. The Head of State and his guest first held private talks, followed by a plenary meeting between the two delegations.
According to Dr. Tamás Sulyok, Brunei is an important partner not only for Hungary but also for the European Union, as it offers significant economic and trade opportunities and is the coordinator of cooperation within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), an organisation that brings together the rapidly developing countries of Southeast Asia.
The President of Hungary noted that he appreciated Brunei's balanced and pragmatic foreign policy, which had created the conditions for the country's spectacular economic and social development.
On a proposal by the Prime Minister, the Head of State awarded Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan of Brunei, the Grand Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit with the Collar and the Gold Star, in recognition of his committed efforts to develop diplomatic, economic and educational relations between Hungary and Brunei.
