New Year's greeting from President Tamás Sulyok and research astronaut Tibor Kapu
My Fellow Hungarians!
Our country is a wonderful place. We shape it together day by day. May understanding and love reign among us in the New Year, and may we all find joy in togetherness.
May peace dwell in our hearts and homes!
May we always have the strength and courage to seek and see the good in each other!
May we see our personal goals clearly, with the firm conviction that it is often our failures that help us achieve our goals!
May we not forget the message of ancient traditions: only together are we capable of truly great things; divided from one another, our very existence falters.
Let us not be afraid to wish and want good things for others and for ourselves:
May God grant good health to us all, to all our fellow human beings, to every Hungarian throughout the world, and to all those who share a homeland with us!
May what hurts be healed. May what is weak grow strong. May what is heavy pass away.
Let us clear the path within ourselves for joy and for our shared successes.
May our families and communities flourish in the power of warm hearts and sober agreement!
Where difficulties arise, let there be sincere support and many words of encouragement!
May our days be filled with cheerfulness and good humour!
May young people find happiness and learn how to be successful!
May God grant us much joy and a sacred mission with the birth of many new lives!
May we, the older generation, discover the important messages hidden within our lives!
May we find our way to the beauty of nature in all its richness, and safeguard our world for the benefit of those who come after us!
May we once again celebrate laureates who achieve worldwide success in science and in cultural life!
May we see the Hungarian flag rise high again and again at international sporting events this year!
Let us live our Hungarian identity freely and joyfully throughout the Carpathian Basin and in communities further afield around the world!
As President of Hungary, in the first moments of the New Year, I would like to express my best wishes for the year ahead together with astronaut Tibor Kapu, who has recently done so much for the unity of the Hungarian nation.
My Fellow Compatriots, dear Hungarians!
It is an honour to greet you on the occasion of the New Year in the company of the President of Hungary.
2025 has been the most decisive year of my life so far. In the early hours of 25 June, in Florida, a rocket lifted off, carrying with it the dreams of countless Hungarians.
It was already morning here at home. Many were on the roads or getting ready for work, but when they heard the news of our launch, everyone put aside what they were doing. That day, oral graduation exams paused for ten minutes, business meetings were interrupted, and travellers pulled over their cars. The heart of a nation beat as one.
While we were racing aboard our rocket at tens of thousands of kilometres per hour, Hungarians around the world stood still for ten minutes.
This year, Hungarian words were heard from outer space, and the Hungarian flag rose to the highest altitude ever reached by man. As a Hungarian, I was able to conduct Hungarian scientific experiments; that was my mission. I am proud to have been able to show the world what we are capable of.
The events and achievements that have made our nation successful did not come about on their own. They required diligence, dedication, hard work, courage, and a mindset that looks beyond individual interests and personal goals, acting instead in
the interest of all Hungarians, with integrity.
These historical turning points have bound us together and shaped us into a nation over the centuries. This is our great common family.
When we look back on the past year, let us all remember with pride these moments that invisibly connect us! The sparkling eyes of countless children following the spacecraft, and the way thousands of Hungarians watched the International Space Station passing across the night sky late at night. Wherever they were in the world, it flew over every Hungarian.
I warmly greet all our compatriots in Nyíregyháza, Kolozsvár, Kassa, Houston, Sydney, São Paulo and anywhere else on our planet. From space, borders are invisible, just as they are in our hearts.
However, our homeland, the beautiful Carpathian Basin, is clearly visible from space. But let us not forget that we also share a larger home: Earth. Everyone who has ever left it has returned. On the isolated space station, we work together in peace,
regardless of nationality or worldview.
Let us do the same at home and in the world. Let us see what even children already know: that there is only one Earth, our cradle. Let us take care of it!
And what will 2026 bring? I know that there are, and must be, public debates. This will be especially true in the months ahead. But even in the midst of these debates, we belong to one nation. Let us not forget that the sun always rises the next day and will shine on all of us in the same country. There is much more that unites us than could ever divide us. Let us treat each other with respect and dignity. Let us look forward to the New Year with confidence and hope. Everything is difficult for one person, but nothing is impossible for fifteen million Hungarians.
I wish you all a healthy, happy, and peaceful New Year, filled with love and success!
My fellow Hungarians!
The first of January marks World Peace Day. May 2026 bring the joy of peace to all of Europe!
Happy New Year, Hungary!
Happy New Year to all Hungarians!
