Historic visit to Kézdivásárhely on the Day Hungarian Freedom and Unity
“15 March is the celebration of freedom and the unity of the Hungarian people,” emphasised Dr. Tamás Sulyok, President of Hungary, on 15 March 2026 in Kézdivásárhely at the ceremony marking the anniversary of the 1848–49 Revolution and War of Independence in . In his address, the Head of State highlighted that on this day, Hungarians living in different parts of the world “speak with one voice and think as one” under the national colours. A shared past and shared values unite the Hungarian people, regardless of where they live.
In his speech, the Head of State recalled the Szekler heroes of the War of Independence, who set an example of patriotism and self-sacrifice. He emphasised that for them, there was no question as to what the homeland meant and what needed to be done for it. According to Dr. Tamás Sulyok, 15 March is a day for experiencing a sense of belonging to the community, when the most important values – family, mother tongue, homeland and responsibility towards one another – come to the fore. These are what give the nation its strength and identity.
The President of Hungary emphasised that every Hungarian living abroad is important to Hungary, and that national solidarity manifests itself not only in a spiritual sense but also in a constitutional one. The Hungarian people shape their future together, whilst preserving their core values and respecting peace as the natural state of Europe.
Dr. Tamás Sulyok was the first sitting President of Hungary to attend the national commemorative ceremony in Kézdivásárhely.
Following the laying of a wreath at the statue of Citizen’s Army artillery officer Áron Gábor in Kézdivásárhely, Dr. Tamás Sulyok, President of Hungary, awarded the Civil Division of the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary to Sándor Tamás, President of the Kovászna County Council in Transylvania, at the town’s Vigadó building.
