Head of State nominates new ombudsman

Due to the election of Dr. Ákos Kozma as a constitutional judge, the position of Commissioner for Fundamental Rights became vacant. In accordance with his powers under the Fundamental Law, President Tamás Sulyok, after consulting with representatives of the legal profession, nominated Dr. Imre Juhász, former constitutional judge, retired president of the Constitutional Court, and lecturer at the Department of Civil Procedure Law at ELTE University, as the candidate for the position of Commissioner for Fundamental Rights.

The nominee has extensive experience in the application of law and a multifaceted knowledge of the functioning of the judiciary. He began his legal career as a university lecturer and later also practiced as a lawyer. In the early 1990s, he participated in a legal defence programme organised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and in 2006 was the founder and creator of the Civil Lawyers' Committee.

From 2013, he represented Hungary in the Council of Europe's Committee against Racism and Intolerance, and between 2015 and 2019, he was a member of the Management Board of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights. He has served as a Constitutional Court judge since 2013, and since 2024 as President of the Constitutional Court.

He also applies the practical experience gained in various positions and functions on a theoretical level as a university lecturer.

The President of Hungary has notified the National Assembly of the nomination.
