The Hungarian Head of State visited the birthplace of American constitutionalism
Dr. Tamás Sulyok, President of Hungary, travelled to Philadelphia, the cradle of the American Constitution. It was in this historic city that the document was born which, 250 years ago, ushered in a new era in the history of modern democracy and continues to define the political system of the United States to this day.
The Head of State visited the National Constitution Center, where he viewed an exhibition detailing the process of the adoption of the US Constitution.
During a discussion with the centre’s directors, Dr. Tamás Sulyok emphasised that Hungary also has a rich constitutional tradition. The Golden Bull of 1222 – the first Hungarian charter of liberties containing written guarantees of fundamental rights – laid down principles centuries ago that served to limit the power of the state and strengthen the rule of law.
