Dr. Tamás Sulyok visited the Hungarians of Texas in Dallas
The President of Hungary met with Hungarians in Texas at the 15 March ceremony held in Dallas. At the commemoration held jointly with the Hungarian Diaspora community, the Head of State emphasised that the Hungarian communities long established in the United States – including the Hungarians of Dallas – are held in high esteem, having stood their ground and continuing to do so today as both Hungarians and Americans.
Dr. Tamás Sulyok cited the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of 1848–49 as an example of Hungarian value creation that enriches others, noting that its ideals of freedom inspired the American people. He recalled that Abraham Lincoln, who later became the President of the United States, submitted a resolution supporting the cause of Hungarian freedom to the US Congress during the Hungarian War of Independence, whilst still serving as a representative for the State of Illinois.
The President also cited the work of the Hungarian Cistercian monks as an example of Hungarian value-creation who, following the dissolution of their order, fled communism, established a new community, and began a new life in the United States. The meeting with the Hungarians in Texas was hosted by the Cistercian Abbey School, named Our Lady of Dallas.
Also in Texas, the Hungarian Head of State held talks with the founder of the space research company Axiom Space at the firm’s development centre in Houston. This leading space technology company sent Hungarian research astronaut Tibor Kapu into space, whose mission has played an important role in sparking interest in the natural sciences and space technology among thousands of young Hungarians, thereby giving new impetus to Hungarian science education.
